London to Tauranga and loving it!
30 July 2013

Sometimes a holiday changes everything.   Whakatane girl, Jenny Kyle, had been living over-seas for six years when she came back to New Zealand for a holiday in December 2008.  Having spent a very happy four years in London, and two years in Japan before that, moving back to New Zealand was not on Jenny’s radar.

However, during that Christmas holiday in the sunny Bay of Plenty, the wheels of change began to turn and she started thinking about moving home…

How did you know you were ready to come home?

During the summer that I came home for Christmas, I fell in love with NZ again! After I returned to London I started questioning what I was doing there - the busy lifestyle was taking its toll and I felt like I was stuck in a time warp - life was passing by so quickly and I felt as though I wasn’t achieving anything.  I wasn’t completely happy in my work and felt like I needed to change direction with my career.  I guess due to my age (turning 30) I was also feeling the desire to settle down a bit, meet someone and have a family.

What cities did you consider when you came back home?

Once I moved back to New Zealand I applied for job roles in both Tauranga and Auckland. I didn't really want to move to Auckland, I felt like I was finished with big cities!  But I applied there anyway because I thought that might be my only opportunity for work. I grew up in the Bay of Plenty and Tauranga appealed because it was close to home.  I also liked the size of Tauranga and the fact that I could live affordably in the country and yet be only ten minutes from town.

I was so pleased when I was offered a job role in Tauranga and didn't have to move to Auckland! I was offered an administration position at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI). I knew going into it that it possibly wouldn't be a long-term role since I was considering my career options, but it was a great transitional role for me. After a lot of thought and a session with a career coach I decided to study again and enrolled in the new social work degree at BTI.  I love being a student again. It’s so great to be studying something that I am passionate about and I really enjoy.

Has moving back to Tauranga been a good move for you?

Moving to Tauranga has definitely been a great move for me. I have really valued the slower pace of life, the sun and the fact that the water is never far away. This helps me to relax!  It’s been wonderful to be able to spend more time with my family, and new extended family - my niece was born while I was in London so it’s been great to be able to spend time with her since I’ve been back. I am also in a new relationship, which is very exciting, and I am really looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

What do you like about living in Tauranga?

I love it when I’ve been away and come home over the Kaimais to see the Bay sprawled out in front of me - with the sun shining and the ocean glistening.  It’s a beautiful little city.  I love the lifestyle - although I’m not that sporty by nature, I’m motivated to live a more active lifestyle because there is so much of that on offer here.

I also love the little things, the markets, the cafes on the beachfront or the cafes in the country and the roadside fruit stalls!  I feel healthier living here.

What would you say to Kiwis who are living in London at the moment, and thinking about coming to live in Tauranga?

I would say do it!  Your mind and your body will thank you for it!
