Slumdog Millionaire Moment Sparks Global Social Enterprise
27 September 2013

They’ll probably make a movie about Diana Judge one day.

The plot outline?

High-flying Kiwi Global Brand Manager for Shell Oil based in North America, has a ‘slum-dog millionaire’ moment while on business in India and gives up her lucrative lifestyle to establish an international aid agency, building homes for the poor through volunteer tourism.

Oh, and the scenery would be stunning.

She travels the world, but has her own home and operation base in Tauranga, New Zealand.

We were delighted to catch up with Diana and to share with you her story and her experiences of running an international social enterprise from this little piece of paradise by the sea.

Diana, you spent quite a few years as a Kiwi-Expat. What brought you home to New Zealand?

My move back to New Zealand was probably facilitated by a bit of a slum dog millionaire moment.
I was on business meeting with my team in India and on the way back to the airport the car stopped.  A young girl hanging on to a little baby started banging on my door saying, “help me!”  It was one of those things…one of those moments. I said to myself, ‘heck I have a great life. I enjoy lots of amazing things but I really want to do something to help the poor’.

So, returning to New Zealand through a series of opportunities I became the CEO of an aid organization called Global Tribe - working for a rock band that was based in the US. I commuted from New Zealand to the US for a while.

For much of the time, I lived on the road based out of Nashville, raising money, raising support and recruiting volunteers to help the poor.  When I returned home I decided that I would setup my own aid organization.

Break Free Expeditions is a volunteer tourism company.

We take volunteers from Australia, New Zealand, UK, and USA.  We take them to nine different countries around the world to build homes for families living in slums and we also take volunteers over to do short-term volunteering in orphanages.

Do you have a favourite destination?

It's really hard to tell you what my favorite trip is because they are so diverse!  I have recently been to Russia, Romania, and Mexico and am about to head off to Cambodia, India and Fiji.

They are all great but it's always nice to come home to New Zealand and regroup a bit before I head out with another team.

Why do you have your home and your base in Tauranga?

Living in the Tauranga, Mt. Maunganui, Papamoa area is totally awesome - it is like you are on holiday 365 days a year.  If it is a fine day I take advantage of the beach and all the beautiful outdoor activities that are here and when it rains, that is when it's work time!

There is a really nice work life balance here and that is what I was trying to achieve.

People are really friendly, it’s very easy to get around and it is very easy to run your business from here - even an international enterprise like mine.

So as long as you have got a good internet connection and an airport close by you are good to go!
