Katie Cox // California to Mount Maunganui
31 October 2014
Katie Cox is a Tauranga import that came to the Bay of Plenty for the surf ten years ago, fell in love with a Kiwi and never left!

As a Bay of Plenty enthusiast and honorary local we asked her to share what she loves about living and working as a photographer in this bright spot.

Over to you Katie!

After graduating with a Communication Degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) I took a year off to travel.

Most people I know went to Europe, however being a surfer I had the South Pacific in my sights.

After spending 3 months in Hawaii I was headed for Australia when several people said to me, "Stop in New Zealand you'll love it!"

So I did.

And I did!

I fell in love with the untouched beauty and small population of New Zealand.

I also fell in love with a Kiwi!  (Not the bird.)

Fast-forward ten years and I have now been living in Mount Maunganui for 8 years permanently, with my now husband, a 20 year mortgage, my dog and most recently a baby!  So I definitely call the Mount home these days.

Growing up in a beach town in Southern California, making the move to the Mount was easy because of the very similar relaxed beach lifestyle, just without the crowds of Los Angeles!

It took a little time to make work connections, as I was just another CV when I first moved here, but in a smallish community I was soon a familiar face and word spread that I was a photographer, landing me my first "real job" in New Zealand working as a photographer for the local newspaper, The Bay of Plenty Times.

I then worked for Tourism Bay of Plenty as the Communications Manager.

I loved my job. I can talk about how gorgeous and wonderful the Bay of Plenty is until I am blue in the face.

I now freelance as a photographer and wordsmith. www.katiecox.co.nz

I have my second underwater babies shoot for Liz Van Wellie Swim School coming up which is always fun!

I was hired to photograph Prime Minister John Key for Blink PR while he was in town recently.

If I am not behind a camera lens or computer screen I am hopefully in the sea. The work life balance is incredible with so many outdoor activities right on our doorstep.

Free-diving and surfing are my other two passions, besides photography, and the Mount is a perfect place to live for both!

When it's flat I combine free-diving and photography to take underwater photos around the offshore islands and when there's swell I surf!
