Meet Baby Matthew! Chris & Emma One Year On
31 October 2014

One year ago we introduced you to Chris and Emma van der Molen who were expecting their first child.  They had recently made the big move back home from London to Tauranga when they were ready to start a family.

Twelve months on, we thought you might like to meet gorgeous little Matthew and to hear from Chris and Emma what the reality of starting their family back home in New Zealand has been like.

CHRIS AND EMMA - HOW IS THE PARENTING ADVENTURE GOING?

CHRIS: Matthew made his world debut on the 28th of January at Tauranga Hospital weighing 3.86 kgs. Parenthood is very hard work, of course, but great! Matthew is such an amazing little boy and it is fascinating to see him developing every day. I’ve discovered a whole new facet to love with having kids. It's hard to describe, and can be pretty overwhelmig at times - in the best way possible.

EMMA: Having Matthew has been completely life changing. Our son is such an awesome little personality – we have so much fun together.

ARE YOU GLAD YOU CAME HOME TO TAURANGA TO START YOUR FAMILY?

CHRIS: We're very happy here. Being close to family has been so incredibly important through the first six months especially.  Emma's parents live only a few minutes away. We were pretty exhausted at times adjusting to the whole lack of sleep thing.  To have family who could pop over and just entertain Matthew for a few hours during the day, or do some tidying up while we caught a few hours sleep was magic.

Matthew loves it when we explore our garden, or take him to see some animals or go to the beach - all things that wouldn't be so easy elsewhere.

EMMA: We miss London sometimes, but we have no regrets about coming back. For us a good place place to raise kids is one where you have plenty of outdoor options for playing.  Tauranga has a great climate, a very good beach, parks and some good nature walks withing a short drive. You don't have the congestion or other problems of the bigger cities, but there is still pretty much everything you need. Add family and friends and we wouldn't be anywhere else.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO AS A FAMILY IN TAURANGA?

CHRIS & EMMA: We have started a bit of a weekend tradition.  On Saturday mornings we like to go over to the Mount, get a couple of coffees and something to eat from an artisan bakery there, and have a walk either on the beach or around the Mount.  There's always something new to show Matthew and it's pretty quiet - a nice relaxing way to start the weekend!

We've taken Matthew to McLaren Falls Park, which is good, and we go to some of the cool new playgrounds that are being developed at The Lakes and on The Strand.

Matthew is still too young for them really, but that's okay - it gives us an excuse to go on the swings!
