From the home of Robin Hood to the beaches of Tauranga

We caught up with Dan Lacey about his work in Tauranga as a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Consultant and how he and his young family have settled into the Tauranga lifestyle. Check out his story here:

Dan, where are you originally from and what brought you to New Zealand?

I am originally from a village in Nottinghamshire, England called Edwinstowe – best known for being the home of Robin Hood! I originally moved to New Zealand several years back on a bit of a whim as I had a sense for adventure and was keen for a better lifestyle. I sold all my belongings, booked a one-way flight and a week in a hostel, and never looked back!

Can you tell us your brief career story?

My first job out of University was working in the marketing department of a business centre back in the UK, this was where I had my first experience with SEO back in 2008. After this I decided to set up my own marketing agency offering web design and SEO – only I didn’t know much about building websites at the time so I bought myself a giant how-to book and taught myself to code.

My agency expanded and I ended up running it for five years with several freelancers on board to help me out in different areas. I closed this down when I moved to New Zealand where I have worked as Head of Marketing for a holistic pharmacy in Auckland, a Marketing Consultant for small businesses and a Marketing Manager for a tourism company in Queenstown.

What has moving to Tauranga meant for your career?

We moved back to Tauranga for our second stint about a year ago as we just love it here so much, it’s our favourite place in New Zealand. Since moving here I’ve been fully focused on search engine optimisation and my work as an SEO Consultant – it’s been fantastic doing this in Tauranga, I’ve built up such a great network of awesome people here and a really good base of clients. I also recently ran my first SEO workshop from here too!

What do you love about living and working in Tauranga?

It’s just a really great vibe here! Everyone is much more chilled out than some other places in the country, but the creative scene and quality of work being done here is still extremely high. There’s the added benefit of having some of the best beaches in the world on your doorstep too.

What has moving to Tauranga meant for your family?

It was one of our key considerations in moving back here, we have a young family and it’s just a great place to bring up the kids (and our dog) – there are lots of family friendly things to do. My partner Bethany runs her own business called Discover Your Chakras where she works from home to remotely help women become balanced and centred using reiki and chakra balancing techniques.

Our family wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now.
