The creation of Community Chiropractic from Singapore to Tauranga

Phillip and his young family made the move from Singapore to Tauranga. With this came the beginning of Community Chiropractic which has a unique business model. Find out more about their journey and why Tauranga is now the place they call home.

“It really is a good mix of city and country life and A really great place to raise a family too”

Phillip, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am originally from South Africa, I came to New Zealand when I was fourteen years old. My family moved to the Bay of Plenty and I finished my High Schooling in Te Puke. Following this I trained as a chiropractor in Auckland for five years. After university I came back to Tauranga for a brief time and then moved to Singapore where I practiced Chiropractic for six years.

Can you tell us your brief career story?

Whilst practicing in Singapore I was exposed to many different styles of chiropractic treatment and models of business, these helped to shape my own method of practice. I was also fortunate to be able to travel in this time and complete post-graduate studies in Australia and America.

What made you want to move back to New Zealand and in particular to Tauranga?

When my wife and I found out we were pregnant with our first child this really emphasized our desire to be with family. Most of my wife’s family and some of mine are based in Tauranga so it was a natural choice to return to our roots.

You’ve set up Community Chiropractic in Tauranga, why is your business model different to others?

I have always wanted to make chiropractic care open to every person no matter their financial situation. I believe that regular proactive chiropractic care is more beneficial to an individual than just having care when there is a serious problem. Having gone through some mental health challenges myself, the care and support that I received from my local community was great. I wanted to be able to give back to those that had supported me. Starting Community Chiropractic with a koha based approach was a way in which I could do that.

What advice would you give to other New Zealanders who may be looking at coming home and would you recommend Tauranga as a place for them to consider?

I would definitely recommend Tauranga. We love the proximity to other major centers like Auckland and Hamilton. We are blessed with beautiful beaches, lakes, rivers, amazing hospitality venues and I believe great work and business opportunities too. It really is a good mix of city and country life. A really great place to raise a family. And for us especially with a special needs child Tauranga offers amazing support opportunities that may not be available in smaller areas.
